The Competition Markets Authority (CMA) has imposed fines on three companies for employing misleading sales tactics that violated consumer protection regulations. Online furniture retailer Wayfair was penalized £4.8 million for using deceptive time-limited offers to pressure customers into purchases. Appliances Direct, an online electronics retailer, received a £1.2 million fine for engaging in similar practices. Additionally, Gold’s Gym was fined £45,000 for failing to provide customers with clear information about the total cost of its memberships.

The CMA’s investigation found that Wayfair promoted deals with countdown timers suggesting limited-time availability, which misled consumers about the urgency and scarcity of offers. Appliances Direct used comparable methods that created a false impression of promotional deadlines. Gold’s Gym was found to have not fully disclosed the overall pricing structure of its membership plans before customers committed to contracts.

As a consequence of the regulator’s actions, some affected customers are expected to receive refunds. The CMA’s enforcement underscores the authority’s commitment to ensuring transparent marketing practices and protecting consumers from unfair commercial behavior. The three firms have been directed to amend their sales approaches to comply with consumer protection laws going forward.
